Clean vs. Dirty, is more like...Tall vs. Heavy
Insisting on clever, original and well-written comedy routines will help you land a show that is "easy-on-the-ears but still stimulating".
Agencies run by business people-operating as comedy experts, can successfully weed out the clueless comedians. But they rarely understand why a comedian will do well sometimes, while, at others times, not well at all. Because audiences can span generations, tastes and education levels, imagining what will satisfy a diverse audience, takes some focused thought by someone who understands laughter triggers.
I eat, sleep and breathe comedy. My experience tells me, for instance, that for some clients, while they ask for "clean comedy" (our most frequently sent shows) "clean" is not as essential as "smart"!
Uncreative comedy has an obligation to satisfy content restrictions. Otherwise, how does it validate itself? But smart, original, comedy can playfully tease the boundaries without offending anyone. If an audience can believe that some thought went into the routines, then it feels safe and can relax.
"Clean but uninspired" can be just as torturous as "Lazy and salty". Nobody wants their show to wind up in the 'corn-field' nor do they want to cringe from tastelessness. The show must not offend, but it also must not bore!
Look at the picture attached to this blog. Is it insulting or clever? Is it comedy from a bygone era or just timelessly funny? Knowing how your group might answer those, is a first step to clarifying your programming strategy.
